Energy from colliery waste heaps - by passing through shaft furnace, and roll crushers to fluidised bed furnace

Waste from dump heaps of collieries containing 20% of coal substance is often so hard that crushing or grinding operations are not justified. This can be remedied by passing the waste first through a shaft furnace in which a low- temperature carbonisation process makes the waste so friable that roll crushers can readily complete the comminution process to under 20 mm particle size. The waste then can be used as a fuel for fluidised bed furnaces where the bulk of its energy is utilised.
