The mechanism is intended for winding up and unwinding a flexible hose (1) or cable or the like without twist. The hose extends from a fixed (4) supply end in the form of one loop or a number of free parallel loops arranged side by side, to the working end passing over one pulley (2), or a number of parallel pulleys. They grip the hose over a covered (3) angle (alpha). The pulley (2) is driven (n), and, if more than one pulley is used, they are driven individually or by a common drive via e.g. gear transmissions whose ratios are selected to provide the different circumferential speeds required for the individual pulleys. The loops may pass around freely rotatable pulleys. The drive may be activated by a rocker switch operated via the hand-held end of the hose.
