Metallurgical coke for use as a reductant in blast furnaces is produced by (a) prepg. a feed from (i) dry particulate coal capable of coalescing on heating and (ii) an organic binder (I), (b) compacting the mixt. into shaped forms, and (c) heat treating the shaped formed at sequentially increasing temps. such that volatiles expulsion is limited in =0.05% per minute, and specifically such that the temp. is increased at a rate of 10 degrees F per minute during the period when the coal is at a temp. at which it tends to soften. (I) may be pitch derived from the distillation and blowing of coal tar, tar or pitch derived from the processing of the shaped forms, an organic polymer, an organic monomer which polymerises on heating, sugar or a sugar product. No air is introduced into the system at any point and thus autoignition or explosion dampers are eliminated. No special blend of coals is required. A high-strength product is obtained in commonly available, safe equipment.
