Protection of buildings from moisture by damp:proof course - where horizontal slot is cut stepwise in building and progressively filled with inert tiles bonded by waterproof cement
To prevent the upward travel of moisture through capillaries in a wall, building or other structure made of stone, etc., a slot is made stepwise. The slot is progressively filled with a material (I) so a continuous, horizontal damp-proof course is obtd. Material (I) contains no capillaries, is non-corrosive and has low electrical conductivity or is on-conducting; it resists electrochemical attack and contains no harmful salts, nor does it react with the stonework to form harmful salts. Material (I) is pref. formed by tiles made of slate; hard-baked clinker; porous concrete clinker; porous concrete; or ceramic. In all cases the tiles are bonded by an inert, water-tight cement mortar which pref. contains polymers, esp. fluorocarbon polymers which make the cement hydrophobic. Used esp. for old or historic buildings, where the invention also improves the thermal insulation of the buildings.
