Research ship friction windlass - has pulleys with grooves accommodating fishing net ropes

The friction windlass is particularly for use on a research ship. It has pulleys with different grooves to suit ropes of different thicknesses. One of the sets of grooves (9,10) is designed to accommodate the precursor members of fishing nets, and the grooves of two windlasses can be spaced apart for a distance equal to the width of the fishnet hold on the ship's deck. The design allows easy changeover from one type of rope to another, without any modification work being necessary.
