A machine for producing plastics bags (I) comprises a stacking station in which the bags are received on a vertically movable rack (II) as they are delivered, and, when a sufficient stack has been accumulated, are lowered by this rack onto a discharge conveyor. As this stack descends, a second, replacement rack comes into position to receive the first bags (I) for the next stack and accumulates them; during this stage, the completed stack of bags is pressed between the lower side of the replacement rack and the upper side of the receiving rack (II) in order to compress the stack. The control is such that the receiving rack (II) does not descend to the discharge position until after the replacement rack has reached its lowered position to press the sheets. The replacement rack then accumulates the sheets, after which the receiving rack is raised into a position to take over these sheets and form the new stack to completion, after which the process is repeated. The bags can be continuously received without any need to interrupt the receiving process for the previously formed stack to be removed; at the same time the bags on the stack being removed do not slip under the acceleration forces because they have been compressed into a compact stack.
