The clutch operating system includes a controllable driving device (9) which moves an operating element (7) of a motor-vehicle friction clutch (3) between a disengagement position, in which the clutch is fully engaged. The position of the operating element (7) is set as a function of the engine speed in the slip range of the clutch between a position of the commencing torque transmission and the full engagement position by a programme control (13), which responds to the engine speed detected by a sensor (25) and controls the engaging operation of the driving device (9) according to a characteristic specified by means of a function generator (45,51). Re-engagement may be delayed by means of a time delay stage (59). Control may be responsive to engine torque, gear setting, initiation of a gear change and vehicle speed as well as engine speed. The system may automatically compensate for clutch wear and may indicate when the wear limit has been exceeded.
