The heat pump driven by a diesel engine and which may be housed in a cellar, is enclosed by a housing (4) designed to reduce noise. Inside, at the top, is a finned tube (7) through which passes the operating medium from the evaporator (11). The outlet end of the tube is connected to the compressor (1) which, together with the engine (2) is sealed inside the housing. Also inside the housing is a heat exchanger (9) receiving heat from the exhaust pipe, acting as a sound absorber and a second heat exchanger (6) for the engine cooling water. The cooling water supply (15) passes through these two heat exchangers, then through an external heat exchanger (9) forming part of the condenser where the water receives heat from the operating medium before it passes to the evaporator. The engine exhaust pipe heat exchanger has the water circulating through a coil wound around the exhaust pipe, inside a double walled tube.
