The multiple layers are dispensed from slots (6) and run down a controlled slope to contact a moving base film (9) in a continuous coating process. Each slot is fed by a tapering slot over a supply feed duct and with a layer of sintered material (10) to ensure even distribution of the fluid over the slot width and length. The sintered plates are made from metal, glass or plastics and have a set porosity depending on the fluid to be processed. The plates are replaceable so that different emulsions can be coated. Simple metal sintered plates are prepared by heat treating under normal pressure in an inert gas.
