Pressure gasification of coal in solid bed - where upper layer of un-gasified coal forms filter removing dust from gas

A generator is filled with coal, esp. non-caking coal, which may consist of briquettes. Gases obtd. from a lower reaction zone in the generator flow upwards through the bed of coal, and then horizontally and radially through a filter bed formed by fresh, ungasified coal, which retains dust in the gas. The fresh coal and dust travel downwards gradually to the reaction zone. One pref. generator has a top filling shaft contg. a concentric and perforated pipe, via which gas obtd. by the low temp. carbonisation of coal travels through the filter bed to an exit. A separate outlet is pref. used for gas which is virtually free from tar and phenol. The amt. of dust in the gas produced is lower than in conventional plant, and the generator output can be increased.
