Insecticide which liberates phosphine - contains aluminium phosphide and a zinc component and ammonium component to protect against hydrolysis

An agent (I) for liberating phosphine contains aluminium phosphide and finely divided Zn or a Zn cpd. which is compatable with the Al phosphide, and a substance which will liberate NH3 or NH4+ ions. The agent also opt. contains other additives esp. tabletting agents and/or agents to give hydrophobic properties and/or prevent self-combustion. (I) is a pesticide. The Zn prevents hydrolysis of aluminium phosphide, even in the absence of the agents giving hydrophobic properties. The protection against hydrolysis given by the Zn is so great that it is possible to risk (I) coming into contact with water e.g. to produce phosphine gas contg. no higher homologues of phosphine and which can be used e.g. in the lab. or to control insects.
