A cutting tool is provided with an adherent coating 10 nm to 0.01 mm thick. The coating consists of carbon with a structure resembling that of diamond. An undercoating is pref. used to improve the adhesion of the carbon coating. The undercoating pref. has a lattice structure similar to that of the carbon coating. The undercoating is pref. Si or SiO2, 10-100 nm thick; or a quasi-amorphous hard material, esp. titanium oxycarbide. The tool is pref. etched before being coated. The coating is pref. obtd. via CVD using plasma activation at below 200 deg.C, and pref. at room temp., where the tool has a bias voltage of 100 V, and acetylene or ethylene at 0.01-1000 Pa is used to provide the carbon.
