The collector has a base panel element provided with a double layer surface coating with selective spectral characteristics. This surface coating comprises an initial cadmium base and cadmium telluride final layer. Pref. the thickness of the cadmium base is between 1 and 100 micro m and the thickness of the cadmium telluride layer is 0.1-50 micro m. The cadmium telluride layer may be crystalline or amorphous and its surface may incorporate a filter structure, e.g. crystal needles or columns spaced between 0.1 and 10 micro m apart projecting perpendicular to the cadmium base. The IR absorption of the cadmium telluride layer can be adjusted via its stoichiometric ratio and/or by doping.
