The thread-cutting machine has an electric drive motor switched on and off by a foot-operated switching unit (2) connected by a cable to the machine. The switching unit has a foot-operated pedal that operates the switch. A protective cut-out in the top of the unit opens if the mains supply fails and prevents the machine being switched on which the mains returns until the cut-out is reset, i.e. until its projecting knob is pushed back down.
