According to the method, the exciter voltage is measured on the sliprings (7) which are connected to the exciter winding and an analog signal is produced which is proportional to the exciter current of the main exciter device (2), after which an electrical signal is produced which is proportional to the exciter voltage and is combined with the analog signal before the current is set. The circuit arrangement is provided with first input points which are connected to the poles of the exciter winding by means of sliprings (7), and with second input points which are coupled to a shunt path (6) which is connected between the main exciter device (2) and an auxiliary exciter device (3), and the first and second input points are connected to an ammeter (9). The method and the circuit arrangement ensure that the exciter current of the synchronous machines (1), which are used in power technology, are set simply, at little cost. IMAGE
