A device for detecting a yarn break or yarn stop in a textile machine, in which the yarn guided by a yarn-guide device is sensed by a light beam which is emitted by a light source transversely to the direction of guidance and which strikes a photoelectric transducer. This photoelectric transducer generates, in dependence on the intensity of the striking light beam, an output signal which is used for actuating a warning or signal device in the event of a yarn break or yarn stop. The detection device possesses a cover part (42), by means of which the light source and the photoelectric transducer are safeguarded in a dust-proof manner and protected against the incidence of external light.
