Method and apparatus for the automatic gripping, threading and pre-perforating of ribbon-like materials, characterised in that a starting piece of a ribbon material to be perforated is drawn off from a supply reel, inserted into a guideway of a perforating machine operating with intermittent feed, then mechanically gripped by conveying elements and conveyed, synchronously with the operating cycle of the perforating machine, until the starting piece of the ribbon is automatically threaded into a punching part and subsequently first pre-perforated in a perforating stamp arranged in a ram and then automatically taken up by a conveying device for continuous perforation, and finally fed to a winding-up apparatus. The apparatus is characterised by a perforating machine (1), in which the lower conveying roller (2) has a surface affording good grip and forms, together with the upper conveying roller (3), conveying elements which can be engaged and disengaged, are accommodated so as to project into the rear part of a guideway (4) and downstream of which is situated a punching part consisting of a die (8), a holding-down device (9) and a ram (10) with inserted perforating stamps (11), the guideway (4) the conveying rollers (2; 3), the punching part and a conveying device (13) arranged downstream thereof being attached to form a single unit.
