PURPOSE:To obtain titled resin having excellent compatibility with high-molecular substances, heat resistance and color and being useful as a tackifier, by polymerizing a thermal cracking oil distillate having a specified boiling range, subjecting the polymer to neutralization and clay treatment and hydrogenating the treated polymer. CONSTITUTION:A polymerized oil is prepared by polymerizing 100pts.wt. distillate, boiling range 140-280 deg.C, obtained from cracked oil prepared by thermally cracking petroleum at -30--60 deg.C in the presence of 0.1-3.0pts.wt. phenols e.g., phenol or cresol, by using 0.01-5.0pts.wt. Friedel-Crafts type catalyst, e.g., boron trifluoride. Then, a hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin is obtained by neutralizing the polymerized oil at 10-100 deg.C with 0.1-20pts.wt. (per 100pts.wt. polymerized oil basic substance, e.g., Ca(OH)2, and adding thereto 0.1-20pts.wt. activated clay, treating the mixture at 10-100 deg.C and hydrogenating the treated polymerized oil. USE:Useful as a tackifier for adhesives, tackifying agents and as a modifier for polyolefins and polyester resins.
