Selective adsorbents for oil - comprising porous substrate impregnated with fluorinated water repellent

The substrate can be expanded perlite, exfoliated vermiculite or another inorganic or organic material with a large specific surface. The water repellent comprises at =1 fluorinated (pref. perfluorinated) cationic surfactant. The products are esp. useful for removing oil from the surface of water, but can also be used as insulating materials for buildings or cryogenic installations (esp. for methane transport). The products are more selective, have a higher oil-adsorbing capacity and a lower H2O-retention capacity, than known adsorbents of this type. A typical compsn. is C8F17-CH2CH2-NCH3CH3-CH2-CH2OH +CH3SO4-.
