String cutting tool (10) consists of a housing (12) with a handle (14) for holding and operating it, and a motor (16) inside the housing. An output shaft (18) is mounted in a top and bottom bearing (20,22), and partitions (24,26) divide the housing into three compartments. The top compartment (28) has a cover (30) with hinge (32) so that it can be opened. The middle compartment (34) contains the motor, and the bottom compartment (36) is formed of a downward-pointing skirt (38) which is open on the ground side. The drive shaft (18) is a cylindrical pipe and joins the top compartment with a bell-shaped part (18a) fixed coaxially to the bottom of the output shaft, and with wider end (18b). A string (40) passes through a container (41) in the first compartment. The bell-mouth (18a) contains one or more radial grooves (42) to catch the free end of the string. A release rod (44) on the handle fits into a hole (46) in the release cam (48) which it moves round a pin (50). A cogged jaw of the thread clamp moves round the pin (54) against the force of the clamping spring (56).
