A pair of spectacles is provided with light absorbing patches (3) which protect certain regions of the retina from full luminous flux. The patches are formed as inserts in the lens glass (1) in the shape of an analus centered on the optical axis. At the centre of the lens a hole (2) is provided to allow total luminous flux to enter the eye through the central region. The hole defines the base of an optic cone having a solid angle of 5 deg. to 8 deg. the apex of which is located at the centre of the cornea or the lens (C). Fibre optic assemblies form the light absorbing annular region.
