An electrodynamic drive system has a constant speed shaft (16) driven by an IC engine (15) connected to a controllable motor-generator set. It is designed to avoid power losses as much as possible. The drive unit has a three-phase generator (17) whose shunt winding (18) is connected to a control unit (19) with variable voltage and frequency. A squirrel-cage motor (36) is connected to the three-phase generator and the squirrel-cage motor's output shaft (37) is controlled, with reference to rotational speed and direction, by change in the voltage and/or frequency in the control unit connected to the three-phase generator shunt winding.
