The process for controlling an automatic operation includes the use of an oscilloscope (1) screen to display time varying parameters of the operation. A mask (6) of a particular graphical form is positioned in front of the screen (7) so that e.g. below a certain line, the oscilloscope light spot is visible, but above this line it is not visible. A detector (8) having two stable positions is aligned so as to receive light from the whole of the oscilloscope screen. If the operation parameters cause the light spot to fall below the line, then light may reach the detector. The detector then produces a pulse which is amplified (9) and fed to a memory (11). An amplifier (12) memory output may be used to control the automated operation.
