The solid laser comprises an optical pump such as electroluminescent diodes whose light is reflected from an elliptical mirror to a cylindrical bar (12) disposed transversely to the light source, and an optical resonator which consists of two mirrors (14) one at each axial end of the bar (12) in a resonant cavity, defining a gaussion resonant mode. The bar (12) has an inner cylinder (15) of an optically absorbent and active material and an outer sleeve (16) of optically transparent material not activated by the light radiation, the two refractive indices being largely equal. The inner cylinder material is chosen such that the absorbtion distance of excitation radiation is of the order of greatness of the gaussion dia. of the central region of the mode, the distance between the gaussion mode axis and the cylinder and sleeve interface (17) is of the same order of greatness as the half of the gaussion dia.
