The powder is placed in a container; and an explosive of low power is located on or near at least part of the container wall; an anvil may be placed in contact with the remainder of the wall. The explosive is detonated to obtain a work hardened mass which easily collapses into powder with a particle size similar to that of the initial powder. The container pref. has a simple shape with at least one axis or plane of symmetry, e.g. a tube or a conical recess. The explosive pref. has a detonation speed of 1200-4000 m/s and feeble ballistic properties. The ratio explosive/powder is pref. above 0.7. Process is used in mfr. of compressor disks which must possess high creep resistance at 550-750deg.C.
