Drill-cores and columns of liquids or pulps are analysed by measurement of the apparent density using a source of gamma radiation penetrating into the section analysed and a detector of the radiation emerging from the section. The source of gamma radiation is a source of which the activity of the radiation is less than 5 millicuries and the energy of the emergent radiation is 20-2000 kev. The measurement of density is pref. carried out on site to avoid any disturbance of the drill-core during transport between the place where it is extracted and the place of analysis. The source and the detector are pref. connected by means of a carriage moving by means of a motor on rails parallel to the axis of the drill-core. The appts. can be used at the bottom of the sea and the signals transmitted to the surface for treatment. Porosity can be measured at the same time as apparent density.
