The pollutants form a sheet which floats on the water, and which may consist of burning hydrocarbons. The boom consists of a skirt made from vertical, stainless steel sheets, which are subjected to severe cold rolling to reduce their thickness, thus increasing their elastic limit and tensile strength; and the steel sheets are partly immersed in the water with the aid of floats. The pref. sheets are made from austenitic steel contg. 0.1% C, 18% Cr, 7.5% Ni, with a density of 7.9 kg/cu.dm, and a m.pt. of 1450 deg.C. A barrage forming the subject of earlier patents was made of stainless steel which cracked due to the stresses produced by the waves or swell of seawater; the invention uses work-hardened sheets which withstand such stresses.
