Sump oil filter for element renewal without draining sump - has inlet valve closing automatically as element is withdrawn

An oil filter of the type which has an axially replaceable, tubular element. The filter case extends axially through the lower part of a wall of an oil sump or reservoir. The inner end of the case has an inlet for oil from the sump. This inlet is now sealed off automatically by withdrawal of the element and is automatically reopened by insertion of a clean element. This sealing off is pref. effected by a spring loaded valve element which is coaxial with, contacted and actuated by, the inner end of the element. The element can now be changed without draining the sump or taking special measures to isolate sump from filter case.
