The work supporting surface for a grinding and polishing machine consists of a rotating disc, against which the workpieces are held by suitable pressure members. This surface is formed by a steel strip (6) wound helically on a supporting base, with the gaps between its turns filled by a softer material (7). The grinding medium is retained by the sunken surface (5) of the softer material. The latter can be shaped for winding between the turns of the coil, and can be impregnated with the grinding medium.
