Automatic washing machine incorporates a microprocessor which controls the washing time and the rinse-water usage of the machine according to the size of the load and the degree of soiling. The processing unit continuously monitors the opacity of the wash liquor, and the cleanliness of the rinse water as determined by its conductivity or its light-transmission property, comparing the instantaneous values with shortly-previous values, and terminates the wash or rinse phase of the washing cycle when a predetermined limit has been attained. This ensures efficient washing even of heavily-soiled articles, and thorough rinsing when, for example, an excessive quantity of detergent has been used.
