Complexes of formula (I) are new. In (I) R1-R4 are alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy or CN; M is a transition metal, a rare earth metal or U. (I) are liq. crystal materials forming a "discotic" mesophase in a given temp. range. Specific (I) are where M is Cu and (i) R1-4 are C10H21 or (ii) R1 and R3 are C7H15 and R2 and R4 are C13H27. (I) are prepd. by reacting the corresp. dibenzoylmethane derivs. with a M salt.
