The chain grate has a feed section (1) passing through the fire tube (2) with the return section (3) below the boiler casing (4). The chain grate passes over guide and drive rollers (6) and can be fed from either end by repositioning of the feed hopper (5) and reversing the direction of travel of the grate. The feed section (1) of the grate is located lower in the fire tube to obtain the optimum combustion conditions. The drive and the frame (6) may be integral with the boiler or separate. The return section of the grate may be boxed in.
