The signal device for road vehicles uses an arrangement of folding arms to allow the triangular warning to be folded inside a tube which has an electric cable drum in its base and a warning lamp at its apex. The cable is of the correct length to ensure that if it is fully wound out the warning signal is placed at the statutory distance behind the stationary vehicle. The cable drum (23) rests horizontally on the ground and carries a vertical tube (4) which has pivots (3,21) to support the arms of the triangular warning sign when it is folded out. The electric cable (26) is wound out of the cable drum by a handle (1). A lamp is housed (33) behind a lens mounted at the top of the tubular support. A carrying handle (28) is formed above the lamp.
