Prodn. of a material for treating skins comprises mixing, in the cold, a "natural" glue (I) with finely-divided powdered leather (II) until a paste is formed. (I) is pred. by mixing aq. ammonia (55-69%), casein (16.5-20.5%). and a mixt. (13-17wt.%) (2) of latex, fish glue, water and a mixt. (1) made of colophany, water and borax. Pref. it also contains an alkali (1-1.5%), a fungicide (0.25-0.35%) and borax (2.8-3.6%). (2) comprises 54-68% natural latex; 4.9-6.1% fish glue; 5.8-7.2% (1) and 24-30% water, while (1) comprises 12.4-15.1% colophony; 6.7-8.3% borax in 45-55% water; 1-1.4% NaOH in 22-28% water and 2.2-2.8% solvent. (All pts. are by wt.) The compsn. is used to fill up the weak points (cavities) in the skins. It is compatible with the skins which after treatment retain their softens and good aging characteristics.
