The method of extracting heat for domestic or industrial heating applications can be combined with a heat pump and can use waste heat from an industrial process or use ambient heat from lakes, rivers etc. The system is based on the use of an evaporator/mixer device in which a liquid (3) circulating through a heat exchanger channel in contact with a heat exchanger plate (1) transfers heat to a second plate (2) in contact with a second circulating fluid (4) so that the latter is heated. A liquid (5) trickling over the first plate is condensed and its vapours are transferred to a second liquid (7) trickling over the second plate which is spaced from it. The transfer is made possible when the tension between the two vapours of the two fluids are in equilibrium. A series of evaporator/mixers can be used to obtain several stages of temp. increase. A system of evaporator/mixers and evaporator/separators can be used with a high temp. source in a circuit in which the required pressures are maintained to obtain a required supply of heat.
