The detonator for a bomb carried by an aircraft includes a coaxial cable providing an electric signal in order to arm the detonator as the bomb is dropped. The electrical signal ignites a gas charge when the bomb is released. The gas pushes a piston to compress a spring which acts on the detonator hammer. The hammer is immobilised by two balls engaging recesses in the side of the hammer. One of these balls may be released by removing the safety peg allowing a spring loaded piston to be withdrawn. The second ball is released on impact. An inertial mass normally holds in place a sliding piston which blocks the second ball (11). On impact, when the inertial mass moves and no longer holds this piston, a spring pushes the piston back, and the second ball is released, in turn releasing the detonator hammer.
