The method of measuring thermal parameters of fluids e.g. temp., enthalpy, enables the measurements to be made simply, with high accuracy, and in high temp. regions. A sound pulse is passed through the fluid from an acoustic source to a receiver. The transition time of the sound pulse is measured over the known distance and evaluated to determine the measurement parameter, e.g. the fluid temp. or the change in enthalpy of a gas to which heat is added or from which heat is extracted. The sound source and receiver can be placed adjacent to each other and the sound pulse can pass from source to receiver via an acoustic reflector within the fluid. Alternatively, two reflectors can be used anda transition time difference measured.
