A crosslinked double-base propellant comprises by wt. 7-17% (A) nitro-cellulose; 27-63% (B) an energetic plasticiser; 4-12% (C) a crosslinking agent which is a prepolymer prepd. by reacting a hydroxy-terminated polyester with a diisocyanate; 0-8% (D) a non-energetic plasticiser; 0.5-6% (E) a Pb sa 0.1-0.9% (F) C black; and 0-60% (G) an oxidiser comprising cyclotrimethylene trinitramine and/or cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine. The propellant is prepd. by mixing a dispersion of Pb salts in an inert liq. with nitro-glycerin, an organic oxidiser and the crosslinking agent (C); mixing nitro-cellulose with the obtd. slurry and subjecting the mixt. to reduced press. while maintaining agitation; casting the obtd. smooth free-flowing slurry into a mould; and curing it. The propellant is smokeless and has good mechanical properties over a wide temp. range. It has a pressure exponent not exceeding 0.6, a strain capability of at least 7% at -65 deg.F. and a tensile strength of at least 50 psi. at 140 deg.F. It is partic. suitable for use in tactical missiles.
