Prior to coating a prosthesis of biocompatible material, such as a metal alloy, with an external layer of compatible material, such as dental porcelain or acrylic resin, a thin intermediate layer is applied by cathodic sputtering. This layer may be of the same material as the external layer or may be of a material which is incorporated in the external layer. The method is esp. useful for prodn. of dental prostheses. The interdiate layer bonds rigidly to the prosthesis and the external layer so that no special mechanical prepn. of the surface of the prosthesis is required.
