The appts. has a rotor with multiple helical blades mounted on a horizontal shaft so the plane of the blades is square on to the wind. A stationary hoop surrounds the path of the rotor blade tips. A set of radially directed vanes are fixed to the hoop and are curved to direct oncoming wind to form a vortex behind the rotor, increasing the air velocity through the rotor and hence the turbine output. The rotor (1) and wind director vanes (23) are mounted on a horizontal shaft (3) carried at the top of a rotatable column (6). An electric generator (20) is carried on the horizontal shaft. The vane support hoop (18) is fixed by a horizontal sheet (14) to the rotating head assembly. The separation distance between vanes is similar to the chord length of each vane at a given radius. The appts. can be used to provide domestic heating.
