Fibrous silicate(s) with condensed aluminium or other metal ions - prepd. from fibrous phyllosilicate(s) and useful as catalysts

Process is claimed for prepn. of modified fibrous silicates (I), by (i) hydrolysing a Mg-contg. fibrous phyllosilicate (II), and (ii) condensing a metal cpd. on the fibrous silicate so obtd. (II) may be chrysotile, sepiolite, antigorite or their homologues. Hydrolysis is pref. by HCl in isopropanol. Step (ii)is by reaction with an aq. soln. of a salt of the metal in presence of a base. Used as catalyst for reactions requiring an acid or bifunctional (acid-metal) activity, i.e. cracking, hydrocracking etc) The reactivity of (I) is comparable with that of zeolites, but (I) are cheaper to make and, having greater porosity, may be able to crack heavier mols.
