Consumable thermocouple for measuring temp. of molten metals - where short thermocouple wires in short quartz tube reduce cost of thermocouple

The junction between two thermocouple wires is located in a tube; and both ends of the tube are embedded in a hardened refractory moulding. One end of the moulding forms a heat shield protecting the tube from slag on the surface of molten metal. The moulding pref. has an open or a closed groove in which the tube is located either longitudinally or transversely; and a straight tube is pref. employed. The thermocouple wire pref. have a dia. below 0.05mm; and the wires are pref. connected to metal conductor leads partly embedded in the moulding. The use of very short thermocouple wires with a very small dia. substantially reduces the cost of the thermocouple. The cost is also reduced by eliminating the protective cap normally used on similar conventional thermocouples.
