The mineralogical plate (11) is produced by a base plaque with a zone to receive indicia. This zone can receive a predetermined number of characters (22,23), the plaques being received in mountings to hold them in position. The characters can be retained by adhesive and are received in a rectangular elongated recess. This has a height equal to that of the plaques and a length equal to a multiple of that of a plaque.
