The friction brake tightening mechanism is partic. for a rail vehicle parking brake, having an electric motor with reduction gear and conversion mechanism producing linear movement of the shoe-actuating member. A spring accumulator is included, also a switch cutting out the motor with the brake in the off position. The switch is formed by double contacts (35,36) and is controlled by the force from the conversion mechanism (38) acting on the spring accumulator (17,18). It can be actuated when the brake (30) is off and fully on. A release stop (26) limits the amount of movement of the actuating member (23), and a locking mechanism secures the latter in its position when the motor is switched off (2).
