Compact tools for thermo:forming sumps for applying fluoridation gels - to minimise the size and complexity of the moulding equipment

A simple device for forming thermoplastic sheet to make a sump for fluoridation of teeth in situ comprises a platform with an outlet to a vacuum device, such as a water pump, against which thermoplastic sheet can be pressed while clamped across the mouth of a hollow cylindrical holder. A plaster model of the relevant tooth and gum profile is placed on the platform. The thermoplastic sheet is preheated, e.g. by dipping into boiling water, and then placed over the model on the platform, being drawn to shape by vacuum then applied between the sheet and the platform. Pref. the platform features an annular recess to locate the rim of the holder across which the sheet is stretched. Simple to produce, the close fitting shape of the plastic sump minimises the amount of (expensive) fluoride gel required to treat each tooth.
