Microprocessor controlled accelerometer for use on railway carriage - provides digital display to indicate degree of discomfort experienced by passengers

The accelerometer placed in a vehicle includes sensors (11) providing signals, at intervals of a few milliseconds, representing vertical and horizontal components of acceleration. Processing circuitry (12) adjusts the gain for each component, adjusting if necessary for varying values of g. The signals are then passed through a low-pass filter (1-80 Hz,(13) ) and a filter (14) providing a weighted analogue signal. This signal is subsequently converted into digital form. Via an interface (20) the signal is used to control a display (19) using LCD to show the components of acceleration. A microprocessor (17) and programme memory (18) control this operation. The device may be used to determine numerically the degree of comfort or discomfort experienced by passengers in a railway carriage.
