This fibre optic cable is fitted with mechanical reinforcing components, and contains one or more optical fibres (6) surrounded by a protection tube (7) and usually an outer sheath (8). The tube (7) and sheath (8) can have any coefficient of elongation. The cable has at least one pair of reinforcing components (9,10) which are in one plane containing the axis of the cable. These coplanar components (9,10) are parallel with and symmetric about the axis of the cable. One pair of reinforcing components (9,10) can be fitted inside the protection tube (7) or inside the sheath (8) or two pairs can be fitted, one inside the tube (7) and the other inside the sheath (8) etc. The coefficient of elongation of the reinforcing components (9,10) is pref. close to that of the fibres.
