The process uses the phase variation of an electromagnetic radiation propagated simultaneously in media having different refractive indexes. The process is based on the variations in one of these media due to optical, acoustical, mechanical, chemical, electromagnetic, electronic etc. perturbations. In one application, an optical fibre is used to measure the temp. rise in a room either to control its heating or to detect a fire. Alternatively, an optical fibre is used for the molecular analysis of solid, liquid or gaseous samples, e.g. to measure the level of atmospheric pollution of a room.
