The device includes a lamp (L) mounted in a reflector (13) behind a diffuser (12). Batteries (P) are housed in a cylindrical tube (3) which forms part of the handle of the torch. Parallel to the batteries in the torch handle there is a cannister of CS gas. A tube runs from the top of this canniser out to a nozzle adjacent to the reflector, directed in the same way as the torch beam. On the two sides of the torch handle there are two controls - a pushbutton which operates the torch, and on the opposite side a trigger which releases the gas from its cannister. The body of the torch is made from unbreakable plastics material, and the device is intended for use by police, and others whose work renders then liable to attack.
