The device automatically detects and rejects containers such as gas cylinders (52) which are insufficiently filled. Each cylinder (52) is placed on one plate (60) of platform scales whose other plate receives a reference weight. The scales are then released, and the two weights are compared. The container (52) is rejected if the unbalance indicates that it is insufficiently filled. The scales are then immobilised in the horizontal position and the container (52) removed from the scales. The container (52) are transported on a conveyor which passes above the scales. The rejected containers are pushed onto another conveyor which lies normal to the first. The device requires no radioactive source, and is cheaper to mfr. as it is completely mechanical.
